You know what, I can't help myself. Maybe it's the fact that I'm just looking for a fight. Maybe it's the fact that I'm just so full of moxie. Or maybe it's just the fact that Bill Maher is a moron and that rubs me the wrong way. In an interview with Larry King, Bill Maher doubled down on his comments insulting the comic book community. Stating he "just found out about the negative backlash" and that said backlash only proves his point. To him I say this:
I mean seriously! Could he be more delusional? First of all he's just getting word of the backlash? Really!? Even if he didn't use social media, I know he reads the news. And I know he doesn't do it the only fashioned way. So the idea that he's not getting the memo is complete nonsense. However, that's neither here or there. Fact is I know he's seen this statement that Stan Lee's team put out the other day:
Mr. Maher: Comic books, like all literature, are storytelling devices. When written well by great creators such as Stan Lee, they make us feel, make us think and teach us lessons that hopefully make us better human beings. One lesson Stan taught so many of us was tolerance and respect, and thanks to that message, we are grateful that we can say you have a right to your opinion that comics are childish and unsophisticated. Many said the same about Dickens, Steinbeck, Melville and even Shakespeare. But to say that Stan merely inspired people to “watch a movie” is in our opinion frankly disgusting. Countless people can attest to how Stan inspired them to read, taught them that the world is not made up of absolutes, that heroes can have flaws and even villains can show humanity within their souls. He gave us the X-Men, Black Panther, Spider-Man and many other heroes and stories that offered hope to those who felt different and bullied while inspiring countless to be creative and dream of great things to come.
These are but a few of the things we the fans of Stan Lee also consider “adulting,” because life both as a child and grown-up can indeed be a struggle. Stan is the author of millions of happy childhood memories and the provider of so many of the positive tools of adulthood. Our shock at your comments makes us want to say “‘Nuff said, Bill,” but instead we will rely on another of Stan’s lessons to remind you that you have a powerful platform, so please remember: “With great power there must also come — great responsibility!”
The fact that Bill can't see the error in his statements should come as no surprise to me. Maher is a sad pathetic man who's looking for attention. A poor soul that has nothing to believe in because he has nothing he holds dear. Just look at his views on religion. I might not be super pro GOD or head over heels for religion. However if it makes people feel good or helps give them purpose. Who am I to shit on their beliefs. Who is anyone to? Maher makes shrewd comments like: "a culture that thinks that comic books and comic book movies are profound meditations on the human condition is a dumb fucking culture." That;s such a careless statement. I can name movie after movie with, YES PROFOUND MEDITATIONS! However, what's the point. Bill Maher just wants attention.
Stan Lee was a genius. This culture is a passionate lot. Maher saw an opportunity to tie his sadness with Lee's greatness and he took it. Even as I write this article I wonder why. But somethings shouldn't be let go. Some times we shouldn't be silent. This is one of those times. Maher is a hateful, sad, lonely individual. And I stand by the fact that Donald Trump could only be elected in a world that looks up to man who promotes such bigotry against Islam. A man that once referred to himself as a "house n*gga". Saying that it was a heat of the banter slip of the tongue. Sounds a lot like Trump's locker room excuse. He's also on the record as calling Misogyny a "BULLSH*T ISSUE". So the man has no bearing on how I feel about who I am. He's an idiot. A racist, Islamophobic, sexist, idiot.
So Bill, please feel free to criticize and hate the things you don't understand. I know you will anyway...I know fans of yours will always see your point of view and back your play no matter what you do. But for those of us who have been inspired to use our talents to make a difference. We respect Stan Lee and what he's done for the culture. We love our culture and what it represents at it's core. Acceptance, understanding, and inclusion. I'm sorry you never had a childhood. That your mommy never hugged you enough. That you grew up with nothing to believe in except cynicism and ignorance. If you ever want a recommendation of a great title to pick up. You let us know. Other than that. Have a great life Bill hope when you pass, your death means something to some one.
